Churchill Class (Year 4)
Welcome to Churchill Class' webpage! We are named after Kent-born Winston Churchill, arguably our most famous Prime Minister.
There are 12 of us in our class. Our teachers are Mrs Smart and Mrs Lapka.
Scroll down to see what we have been doing each term!
Summer Term 1
Back to school after our well deserved Easter break, and looking forward to a sunny Summer term!
Some of you may have noticed our incubator in the hall. We have been very lucky to be given the opportunity to look after these 12 eggs and hope to see 12 chicks in 21 days! The eggs were kindly loaned to us by Hugo Wells from
www.hugowellspoultry.co.uk
In topic this term we are Investigating Pattern. It is an art based topic, encouraging us to understand how to create aesthetically pleasing patterns and to try a wide variety of media. Watch this space for some wonderful pieces of art!
In Science we are learning about friction. We have already had fun learning about forcemeters and finding out about the force it takes to move items. We have looked at surfaces that produce high friction when they move across each other, and those that produce low friction. Next we are going to be finding out when high friction is good, and when we ideally need to reduce friction.
In ICT we started this term reminding children about the importance of staying safe online.
Spring Term 2
At the end of the Spring Term, we had a wonderful trip to Rochester Castle and The Guildhall Museum. We did not have time to see all of the exhibits, so if you get the chance, it is a lovely museum. Photos of the day to follow soon! We have a collection of photos in our class trip book too, which you can find in the classroom.
This term we have been looking at Aztecs! The children have enjoyed the gruesome stories of Aztec festivals and rituals.
Spring Term 1
We have returned after Christmas refreshed and ready to carry on our learning journey!
Our Topic this term has a Geography focus and is called Settlements. We began the term watching a clip from a Wallace and Gromit film and hunting for clues about the location where the film was set. We considered how and why places change by considering the changes that have taken place around our school. We have begun to learn about some of the earliest settlers in our country, the Saxons. We are looking forward to finding out even more as the term progresses.
We have been thinking about what is important in a town, and then created our own, complete with football stadium and wedding dress shop!
We have also been mapping out the route Vikings would have made to get to England and other countries they invaded, like Vinland (America). We pretended to be Seif the Lucky and wrote back home about our adventures!
We also carved out our names written in Viking runes (letters).
In Science we are learning what makes plants grow. We have looked into the roots and the stem, and are going to be investigating the effect of different variables on a plant's wellbeing as we plan our own fair tests.
In ICT we began the term by considering e-Safety and we discussed how we must never give out personal information about ourselves on the internet. We learnt these top tips.
Top Tips!
- Always ask a grown up before you use the internet. They can help you find the best thing to do.
- Don’t tell strangers where you live, your phone number or where you go to school. Only your friends and family need to know that.
- Don’t send pictures to people you don’t know. You don’t want strangers looking at photos of you, your friends or your family.
- Tell a grown up if you feel scared or unhappy about anything.
Autumn Term 2
It is a new term and we have a new exciting topic! It is called Take A Seat. It is an art and design based topic, so we are going to be very creative this term. So far we have looked at Vincent Van Gogh's paintings of chairs. Our topic board is waiting for all the photos of different chairs you have taken. Don't forget to bring them in!
Meet our new class pets!! Biscuit, Cookie, and Wispa
After our trip to Kent Life, Mrs Lapka and Mrs Smart couldn't help adopting these three Alpacas as Churchill Class' new pets. You can visit them at Kent Life to check they are being well looked after.

Our Topic board is looking comfy!
Autumn Term 1
This term we are enjoying learning about the Tudors and finding out more about Henry VIII and his wives. We have made Tudor roses and swords which look great on our Topic board. Our school trip to Kent Life later on this term will help us learn even more about this interesting time in our history.
Our classroom now smells great too after making these Tudor Pomanders!
We have also had a chance to do some weaving.
We learnt about Moving and Growing in our Science lessons, and looked carefully at our skeleton and the skeletons of other animals as we compared them and see what we have in common and how we differ. We investigated muscles to try and understand how we are able to move. We planned an investigation to see whether all bones grow as we get older.
We always work hard in our lessons and keep to our Golden Rules. We have a Class Charter to ensure that our school is a happy and fair place where we can play and work together.
