Darwin Class (Year 3)

Darwin class is the name for the children in year 3. There are currently 11 children in our class. Our class teacher is called Mrs Smart.

This picture of some of us was taken on World Book Day (March 1st 2012) where we were allowed to come to school dressed as our favourite book character.  We had to bring in the book we were from.  As you can see, lots of us like Where's Wally!

We have learnt a lot since we started in Year 3.  Our topics so far have included:
  • Once Upon a Time
  • Romans
  • Rainforests
  • Ancient Egyptians
  • The Olympics

Rainforests

We enjoyed learning about Rainforests in Term 3.  We found out where in the world they are and what the weather is like.  We researched the variety of animals in the rainforest and thought about how they survive in that climate.  We found out about the tribes that lived in the rainforest and wrote letters in support of the Jawara tribe to Survival International, an organisation working for the rights of tribal people.  We were thrilled to receive a reply from them, thanking us for our support along with a calendar for our classroom.

In ICT and Art, we created our own pictures showing the four different layers of the rainforest using the Paint software.  We also experimented with pastels to create different shades of green and brown and created a rainforest scene.

Ancient Egypt

In Term 4 we learnt about Ancient Egypt - it was a fantastic topic!  We found out about some of the famous Pharoahs such as Tutankhamen and Cleopatra;  we learnt about the pyramids and tried to build our own step pyramid from Lego - harder than it sounds!

We learnt about mummification and sang a great song to help us remember how disgusting mummification actually was!  We had the chance to see a real mummy on our school trip to Maidstone Museum.  On this trip, we also had a chance to make an Egyptian artefact.  We made canopic jars, amulets and death masks.

The Olympics

This term we are looking ahead to the London 2012 Olympic Games.  We have been finding out all about the Olympic torches and logos from previous Olympic games and have tried to design our own.

We have been looking into the venues for all the different sports and finding out that they are not all going to be held in London, but in other places and have been finding out where in the country they are.  By looking at the sports that are included, we thought of other sports that we would like to see included as an Olympic sport and drew campaign posters to try and persuade the Olympic committee to include them.
