Heath Class (Year 5 and 6)

Welcome to Heath class.

Heath class is a mixed class of year 5 and 6 pupils. We are a class of 13 children and Mrs Homer is our class teacher.

This term we are learning all about the Olympics. This linked nicely with our topic last term about the Ancient Greeks. We started by learning about the myth of the 12 Labours of Hercules which is said to be how the Ancient Olympics started. We drew a picture of each labour for a display in our school hall.

We then learnt about the revival of the Modern Olympics by Pierre de Courbertin. He also introduced some of the other traditions that we have such as the olympic rings, the olympic hymn, the olympic motto and the olympic oath. We had a go at making our own oaths.
Currently we are looking forward to London 2012. We have started learning about some of the athletes that will be taking part, as well as finding out about the mascots Mandeville and Wenlock and the different sports that will take place. We have designed our own 'winners medals' and then had a go at recreating them using plasticine and plaster of paris. This was trickier than it looks as all the lettering had to be written back to front so that it came out the correct way on our medals!

Last term our topic was called Meet the Greeks and was all about the Ancient Greeks.

We learnt about the Athenians and the Spartans and how each of the city states was ruled.
We made our own soldiers with armour and learnt about the Battle of Marathon.

Then we learny about Greek architecture. We compared the Parthenon with the British Museum and then had a go at making our own clay models of the columns in the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian styles.
